Search · Small Business SEO
The whole program, sized for a real budget.
A funded competitor can work 400 keywords at once. You can work six. Which six is the entire decision, and getting it wrong costs you a quarter.
The short answer
What small business SEO actually is: the same program, cut to what your cash flow carries.
Small business SEO is the same work a funded brand runs, cut down to the handful of searches that actually produce jobs for you, and paid for out of this month's money rather than an annual budget. Fewer terms. Chosen more carefully. Worked until they stay put.
The constraint is not skill, it is sequencing. Everything on the list is worth doing eventually. The question is what gets done in month one versus month nine, because the money arrives monthly and has to keep justifying itself.
So things get cut on purpose. No 40-page export nobody opens. No weekly blog chasing traffic that never picks up a phone. The budget goes to the profile, the pages that name your services plus your towns, and the reviews.
The honest limit is time. A program this size takes 4 to 6 months before compounding shows, and there will be a month where the report says the work happened and the numbers barely moved. That month is normal, and it still gets reported straight.
A real page one, captured this month. Ads first, then the three-spot map pack, and the first true blue link most of a screen down. Each block is won differently, and that's the job.
What arrives
What you get: 6 deliverables, scoped in writing before we start.
- 01
A keyword set small enough to name
Six to ten terms picked on demand, difficulty, plus how close each one sits to somebody buying. You get the list, the reasoning behind each pick, and the terms we deliberately left off it.
- 02
Pages rewritten every month
Written into the Local Engine scope so it cannot quietly become zero. Titles, headings, body copy rewritten so the page answers the search outright. Page count is agreed in writing per engagement, and it widens once the Market Engine takes the work across your other towns.
- 03
The profile kept moving
Categories, services, service area, photos, questions, worked on a steady weekly cadence. For a local operator this is usually where the first movement shows up.
- 04
Citations corrected before they cost you
Your name, address and phone number made identical everywhere they appear (citation consistency). Mismatched listings are among the cheapest ranking problems to fix and the most common to have.
- 05
Review requests running on their own
A request that goes out while the job is fresh rather than a week later when the customer has moved on, plus replies drafted for you. Volume and reply speed both feed local ranking.
- 06
One report you read in five minutes
What moved, what did not, what we do next, what we need from you. If a number went the wrong way it is in there with the reason attached rather than buried under a chart.
Fit
Who this fits: 4 signs it is you.
This program assumes an owner who still touches the work: quoting jobs, answering the phone, signing the invoice at month end. That changes what we spend your money on.
This is you if:
- You pay for marketing out of the same account that buys materials.
- You can name the three jobs you want more of.
- You have capacity for more work next month without something breaking.
- You have been sold a retainer before and could not tell what it bought.
This is not you if:
- Your budget is under $1,500 a month for the ongoing work. Below that we would be charging you for something too thin to move anything, and Starter Presence at $750 one-time is the honest first step instead.
- You sell nationally against funded competitors. That is a different program and a bigger number, and pretending otherwise wastes both our time.
- You want a post a week for traffic. Traffic is not the product here, booked work is.
- You expect SEO to replace selling. It shortens the list of people you chase. It does not close them for you.
How the work runs
How it runs: 4 steps across a 90-day first pass.
- 01
Audit before proposal
A free look first, findings whether or not you hire us. The fuller 300+ point teardown is there if you want the whole picture before you decide.
- 02
Pick the six terms
Demand, difficulty, buying intent scored against each other, then a shortlist you approve. Nothing gets worked until you agree it is worth ranking for.
- 03
Fix what is free first
Profile fields, citations, existing pages. The work that costs attention rather than money gets done before anything that needs new production.
- 04
Then compound it
Pages, posts, reviews, all on a fixed monthly cycle at a cadence agreed in writing up front. The Market Engine takes the same cycle across your other markets when the business is ready for it, not on day one.
Proof, not a pitch
Built by people who ran the truck first.
Two service businesses run out of the back of a truck, then a fence company across three states. The month where the marketing bill feels heavy is not a hypothetical here, which is why the scope on this program is agreed in writing before it starts.

Search
What it costs: published, not quoted.
This is the Local Engine at $1,500 a month, the tier most operators start on. The price is flat, and what changes is where the effort points: your service area competitiveness and how many services you want ranking. The Market Engine at $3,000 a month is where you go once you are working more than one town.
Start on the Local Engine. Move up to the Market Engine when you are ready to own more than one town, and to the In-House Engine when you want a marketing department without the hire.
Every retainer tier, with what is in it| Tier | Price | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|
| Local Engine Get found where you already work: the map pack and the searches that ring the phone. | $1,500 per month | The price is flat. What changes is where the effort points: a harder town, or more services, means the same monthly hours aimed at fewer targets, and we say which before you sign. Page counts and posting frequency are agreed in writing per engagement, so scope cannot quietly drift. Not included. Multi-market page coverage, expanded listings and the AI-search program at full strength are the Market Engine. We would rather tell you when you are ready for it than sell it to you early. |
| Market Engine Own every town you serve: coverage pages, AI-search visibility, listings everywhere that counts. | $3,000 per month | How many markets and how many services. The price is flat, and the page program inside it is agreed up front, in writing, so the scope cannot quietly drift. Not included. Placements on other platforms, PR-grade link campaigns, social management, video creative and conversion testing are the In-House Engine, and it is capacity-capped. |
| In-House Engine Everything, run for you: search, content, placements, PR-grade links, social presence, video creative, conversion work, quarterly strategy. | $6,000 per month | Capacity, not scope creep. We run a small number of these engagements at a time so the work stays deep rather than spread thin across too many accounts. Not included. We still do not sell paid ad management, and we still will not commit to a monthly number of editorial links. Both get the same answer at every tier. This tier is also capacity-capped: a few seats, run deep, and we will say plainly if one is not open yet. |
Objections and questions
Questions we get asked: 6 answers.
Small-business buyers ask sharper questions than big-budget ones, because it is their own money. These are the six that come up first.
Ask us something else How much does SEO cost for a small business?
The Local Engine runs $1,500 a month and covers the profile worked every week, the site's pages worked every month, citations kept correct, the review engine running, technical upkeep, rank tracking with an AI-search baseline, plus a monthly report and a real call. The Market Engine runs $3,000 a month and takes all of that across every market you serve, then adds the social profiles Google reads, the link outreach program, the AI-search program at full strength, conversion testing and a quarterly strategy session. Page counts and posting frequency are agreed in writing per engagement. Every figure we publish is on the pricing page, not saved for a sales call.
What should I look for in an SEO company for small business?
Published prices, a scope you get in writing before anything starts, plus a straight answer on who does the work. If the proposal says content and on-page work with no scope attached to it, that is how a retainer quietly turns into nothing. Ask what happens in month one versus month six. And walk away from anyone guaranteeing a ranking position, because Google does not sell positions and does not take instructions from agencies.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Sometimes no, and it is cheaper to hear that now. If nobody searches for what you do in your area, if you already run at capacity, or if your jobs come from one commercial account that renews on a handshake, your money belongs somewhere else. The free audit checks whether real demand exists in your towns before you spend anything. When the answer is no, we say no and you keep the findings.
How long does SEO take for a small business?
Profile and citation corrections can move map-pack position inside 30 to 60 days because those signals refresh quickly. Page work and review volume compound over 4 to 6 months. Anyone quoting faster on the second half is guessing. What you should expect in month one is a documented baseline plus visible fixes, not a ranking jump, and any agency promising the jump is setting up a difficult month three.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes, and a fair amount of it you should. Filling out your profile properly, asking every customer for a review, replying to all of them, writing a real page for each town you serve: none of that requires an agency, and doing it will get you further than most local competitors. Where operators stall is consistency and knowing which six terms to chase. If you have the hours, take them. If your hours are worth more on a job site, that is what a retainer buys.
What is the difference between small business SEO and local SEO?
Local SEO is a tactic set: the map pack, the profile, the service-area pages, the citations. Small business SEO is the whole program scoped to a budget, and local work is usually the largest piece of it because that is where a service business gets calls. If you serve customers at their address, the two overlap heavily. If you sell online or serve one commercial niche, the mix shifts toward pages and links instead.
